Few things spoil a trip faster than a missing document at the airport. A forgotten visa, an expired passport or a wrong name on a ticket can stop you from boarding, and it is often too late to fix at that point. Use this checklist before every international trip so you travel with confidence.
1. Passport
Your passport is the most important document you carry.
- It should be valid for at least 6 months after your return date. Many countries refuse entry otherwise.
- Check that it has enough blank pages for visas and entry stamps.
- Make sure it is not damaged, as torn or water-stained passports can be refused.
2. Visa or Entry Permit
Visa rules depend on your nationality and your destination.
- Check whether you need a visa before you buy your ticket.
- Confirm the visa type, validity dates and number of entries.
- Print a copy of your approved visa or e-visa and keep a digital copy as well.
3. Air Ticket and Booking Details
- Check that the name on your ticket matches your passport exactly.
- Confirm the date, time, airport and terminal.
- Keep your e-ticket and booking reference where you can find them without internet.
4. Hotel Booking or Invitation Letter
Immigration officers may ask where you will stay.
- Carry a confirmed hotel reservation or the address of your host.
- If you are visiting family or friends, bring an invitation letter if your visa requires one.
5. Travel Insurance
Some countries require insurance, and it is wise to have it even when it is optional.
- Choose a plan that covers medical care, trip cancellation and lost baggage.
- Keep the policy number and the emergency contact number with you.
6. Proof of Funds and Return Ticket
Some embassies and border officers ask to see that you can support your stay.
- Carry recent bank statements or a card you can use abroad.
- Keep your return or onward ticket ready, since airlines may ask for it at check-in.
7. Other Documents You May Need
- Vaccination certificate, if your destination requires it
- Attested certificates or equivalency documents, for study or work travel
- Employment letter, student ID or business invitation, depending on your purpose of travel
- Driving licence or international driving permit, if you plan to drive
8. Keep Backups of Everything
- Take photos or scans of all your documents and store them in your email or cloud storage.
- Carry paper copies in a separate bag from the originals.
- Share a copy with a trusted family member at home.

- Passport valid for 6+ months, with blank pages
- Visa approved and printed
- Ticket name matches the passport
- Hotel booking or invitation letter ready
